Certified Prosthetist (BOC), VFA Central America
A Certified Prosthetist based in Guatemala, Dave is VFA’s director of prosthetics education and technology in Central America. He is responsible for assisting partner organizations in the set up of prosthetic and orthotic facilities. He also trains technicians to measure, produce, and fit prosthetic limbs for war victims. One organization he works with is the Organization for the Promotion of Disabled Persons of El Salvador (PODES). During his tenure with VFA, Dave has performed similar duties in Cambodia, Sierra Leone, Nicaragua, Honduras, Vietnam and other regions of El Salvador.
Serving in the United States Marine Corps from 1969 to 1971, Dave sustained a war injury in Vietnam, requiring bilateral amputation of his legs. His own experience as an amputee spurred him into pursuing a career in prosthetics.
Dave received extensive training at the New York University Post Graduate School of Prosthetics and an additional 12 years at J.E. Hanger of West Virginia Inc. Serving as either a member of, or a consultant on national and international delegations focused on prosthetics and rehabilitation, Dave’s work benefitted people in Cambodia, El Salvador and the former Soviet Union. Dave then primarily aided injured Salvadorans in Cuba, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Mexico, and the United States. In May, 2000, Dave was awarded an honorary Ph.D. in Humanities from the University of West Virginia.
Currently, Dave is a member of the American Board of Certification in Prosthetics and Orthotics (ABC), the International Society of Prosthetics and Orthotics, and the Board of Certification in Orthotics & Prosthetics (BOC). Dave is also a Board member of The Justice Project, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that addresses issues of social justice in the U.S. and abroad. The Justice Project is affiliated with VFA.
