Concerts for a Landmine Free World

by Bobby Muller on Oct 12, 2007

VFA’s Concerts for a Landmine Free World began in 1998 with a concert in Washington, D.C. In 1999 and 2000, dedicated artists brought the message and unique acoustic in-the-round format to audiences across the U.S. and Canada. These concerts were met by an extraordinary public response.

Emmylou Harris launched these concerts after accompanying Bobby Muller, president of VFA and co-founder of the 1997 Nobel Prize-winning global campaign to ban landmines, on a trip to Cambodia and Vietnam. As a result of her first-hand exposure to the hardships faced by landmine victims and the devastation in those mine-infested regions, she embarked on an effort to recruit other musicians to the cause in an effort to raise public awareness and consciousness.

Since its launch in early 1998, VFA’s Artists in Support of the Campaign for a Landmine Free World has brought scores of celebrities to the cause. VFA’s first concert was held at Constitution Hall in Washington, DC in 1998. Additional concerts, press conferences, and public service announcements have been planned. Through this important public outreach initiative, VFA hopes to convince more and more Americans that landmines are an issue worthy of their time, attention, and support.
