Veterans for America’s work at Ft. Carson has demonstrated the Army’s failure to respond to the war-related needs of returning soldiers from Iraq and Afghanistan. We are pleased that our work has triggered a Government Accountability Office (GAO) investigation.

Veterans for America applauds Senators Akaka, Boxer, Bond, Lieberman, Harkin, Murray, McCaskill, Obama, and Sanders — a bipartisan group of members — for calling upon the GAO to undertake an immediate review of Department of Defense (DOD) screenings, diagnoses, referrals, and treatment of service members who may have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other mental health conditions as a result of their service in Iraq and/or Afghanistan.

Steve Robinson, Director of Veterans Affair, and Georg-Andreas Pogany an Investigator & Outreach Coordinator of Veterans for America have been working tirelessly with soldiers at Ft. Carson in Colorado and other military installations. Veterans for America is appalled by the number of soldiers at Ft. Carson who have received inadequate mental health care and substance abuse treatment, and insufficient reintegration training. We delivered the results of our investigation to Congress to reinforce the urgent need for a national examination of the care of our returning wounded.

According to Bobby Muller, President of Veterans for America, “Ft. Carson represents the Army’s failure to care for those who have returned from war zones. It is time to correct these failed procedures and prepare for the men and women still serving in Iraq and Afghanistan who have not yet entered the military health care system.”
